Are you not sure if your sentences make sense? Do you struggle to find the right words? Or maybe you just hate grammar? Elissa started her editing career as a copy editor during her college newspaper days (she actually started as editor-in-chief of her junior high school newspaper, but for some reason no one seems impressed by this), and she now teaches basic grammar skills to university students. So you can be certain that her copy editing, line editing, and proofreading skills are ready for anything you throw at her.
What is copy editing?
Copy editing focuses on the mechanics of the English language. When Elissa copy edits, she identifies and corrects grammatical errors and formatting inconsistencies. In other words, she’ll point out every time you use a comma wrong, and she’ll also make sure you use the same font or chapter heading styles throughout the project. (She does not focus on whether the sentences actually make sense, though.)
What is line editing?
Line editing, sometimes also called content editing, includes copy editing but also looks at word choice, style, voice, pacing, tone, and other items to help your sentences shine. This is a sentence-by-sentence edit that focuses on making sure each line of your novel makes sense and flows well.
What is proofreading?
Proofreading is a final pass through a manuscript to make sure all errors have been identified and fixed. This happens AFTER your manuscript has already been copy edited, either by yourself or by another person. Elissa only accepts proofreading projects that have been copy edited by another individual first (in other words, she will not proofread projects she copy edited, because the point of proofreading is to have another set of eyes check the text for errors the copy editor might have missed).
Note: If Elissa proofreads your manuscript and realizes it has not been copy edited (meaning: she finds lots of errors that any sane copy editor would have already caught), she will stop editing and contact you to see if you want her to continue at the copy editing rate instead.
